For those of you who have just emerged from your bomb shelter, welcome to the 21st century.
You’re here so congratulations on finding the Internet, but in case you have not heard of the Twilight Saga (aka TS) let me give you a brief rundown. Twilight is a book about the impossible love between a vampire and a human. It was published by Stephenie Meyers (aka SM) in 2005 and was quickly followed by the follow-up novels New Moon, Eclipse and finally Breaking Dawn (published in the fall of 2008). The four books are together called “The Twilight Saga”. They are currently being immortalized in a series of movies of the same name.
These books have become their own phenomenon. They have an avid following who run and frequent countless fan websites many of which have communities that run the gauntlet of activities from TS news (particularly during the filming of the movies), message boards, chat groups, non-profit fund raising and even sites dedicated to writing fan fiction.
Although I had heard of these books for years, I was not interested in reading “the next Harry Potter”. Heck, I wasn’t even interested in reading the first Harry Potter! I now realize that this name calling was doing SM a big disservice (at least in my book) as these books were nothing like Harry Potter except for the fact that they both attracted avid fans. Finally in the summer of 2009 I had heard enough to be intrigued and since I was unemployed and had nothing better to do I decided it was time to read the books for myself.
I was hooked. It’s a simple fairytale, but it gave me so much to think about. There was something about Edward Cullen that made me need to know more.
I’ve actually started to write a little Fan Fiction. Here’s a link to my profile:
